Principles
To ensure Earthmarks remain accurate, fair and representative, these are the principles we stick to:

Data normalises by revenue, scaled -1 to 1 (median 0) per sector to handle outliers.
Reported data: Company disclosures (i.e. Impact Reports) vary from audited to unaudited by size and governance with reporting inconsistencies. Location-based Scope 2 emissions are used by default; market-based used when available.
Ownership: Subsidiary data first; flags parent data use on profiles.
Modeling: Predicts gaps via revenue-based regression (trained on ground truth)—for insights only, not scoring.
Aligns with GHG Protocol (Scope 1-3 emissions) and ESRS/CSRD topics: E1 (Climate Change), E2 (Pollution), E5 (Circular Economy). Supports businesses complying with the Empowering Consumers (EmpCo) Directive in the EU, anti-greenwashing guidelines, the Green Claims Code from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK, and the FTC's Green Guides in the US.
